Daddy and His Princess, 2012

Smiley Girl, 2012
Wow, Has it really been 6 years?! I remember so vividly the massive amounts of paperwork and the extremely painful WAIT for our precious baby girl. Words cannot express how hard of a wait that it is really, but I equate it to something like this...                                                                                                   Imagine that you have been pregnant for not 9mths, but in most cases for a year or longer, then you give birth (in the adoption world we get a referrral that includes a picture of your precious child). Now, wait...you cannot have your child that you birthed , not yet...you have to wait (this time having seen your child's face). You have to wait at least another 3 months (in some cases longer) before you can bring your precious treasure home. The minute you see that beautiful child's picture, the Wait, no matter how short or long, becomes excrutiatingly painful!! Your heart yearns for this child!
... and then the day arrives! The day that your child will join your family, the day that you can touch, hold and love that treasure is upon you. Your emotions are like a roller coaster of feeelings. You are filled with joy, excitement and love... actually you can't describe what it is really like. I can only say that it is the closest I have ever come to knowing intensely, deeply, and without question the love that Jesus has for us! My precious Mia was placed in my arms, and the world around us ceased to exist. We were thrilled to have our precious little girl in our family. I was overwhelmed with emotion, and she and I spent the next few hours crying, she because of grief and fear at our "strangeness", and I because of love and thankfulness... A Baby Girl!
And now we are HERE...
... fast forward, 6 YEARS... Mia's Chinese name is "Le" (Le le as she was called). "Le" means joy and happiness. We can tell you that she was appropriately named. She has filled this house with JOY. Not that our boys didn't and don't bring us joy,but Mia brought an amazing new JOY. She brought giggles, girly things and amazing smiles. She brought lots of sillness and a lot of princess attitude. She was and is one of the happiest children I have ever known. She loves life and loves her family!
Wow! God blessed us with a precious treasure, and we could only have imagined the journey that He would have in store for us over these past 6 years!
Mia started it all...
Happy Forever Family Day, our Precious Mia!

A Visit With Friends

We knew we weren't officially taking a Spring Break, but we finished school early, and Brad was able to take a few days off. So, we took a quick road trip to visit with some dear friends. The kids spent all their waking hours running, playing and eating. The grownups put in many hours of sharing and talking. Oh, and did I mention the wonderful food... we ate and ate and ate some more.  It was a great trip, and  we greatly enjoyed the hospitality of our friends. We always leave their home with a little bit of sadness, but we always feel encouraged, revived and refreshed. God has so blessed us with dear friends to share the challenges of adoption and this journey of life.

HE Chose Me...

...to be Momma to seven beautiful children, some by birth and some born in my heart
... to raise them to Love and Honor Him
... to meet the challenges that each day of this parenting journey brings
... to parent children with special needs, some physically present and some with scars from the past
... to parent children who struggle to feel loved and accepted
... to parent children who have never known what unconditional love is
... to make this a whole family in spite of its faults, struggles and weaknesses
Truth is He chose Me... He chose me because He believes in Me... He knows the plan ...

For I know the plans* I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper* you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.*  Jeremiah 29:11

Truth is He chose me(us) because He knows that I (we) can make it ... in spite of the challenges and struggles. Truth is He wants to boast in Me (us).

"He permits and sometimes even dictates difficulty for those in whom He boasts so that they will prove what He already knows is true. The Lord does not put us to tests that He knows in advance we don't have the wherewithal to pass. He boasts in His faithful followers then lets them prove Him right. Sometimes the person most shocked by the proof is the human put to the test." Beth Moore, Mercy Triumphs

Truth is He knows of my(our) struggles with these hurting children. Truth is He knows how it will all end. Truth is He loves me and He loves my children. He wants what is best for us all.

" God knows how everything will turn out. And, and for every single person who belongs to Him, it turns out well. We are not the exceptions. Neither our sins or our sufferings are big enough to offset the ordered outcome" Beth Moore, Mercy Triumphs

It is now that I must choose to meet this challenge and these struggles because I know that God has placed them in my hands. The struggles and challenges are hard. This journey, the journey of adoption and parenting, is HARD. Parenting hurt children is the hardest parenting I (we) have ever done. It is not the same as parenting a child who you have raised from birth. A hurting child has never known the love of parents, never had stability and never know permanency. It is a constant battle to keep the hurting child on the right path and to build a "moral warehouse" in that child,. It is one struggle after another to keep that child from controling everything(because this is how they kept their lives from unraveling), to keep that child from domineering and taking over the family. It is difficult to comfort that child when they do not even know why they are hurting. Loving a child who has never know love and has no way of knowing how to accept love brings lots of hurts. It hurts them because they have only known rejecttion, and it hurts you because they can only reject your love over and over. Many times it is a struggle within yourself to love a child that just doesn't "seem to fit".   And, in spite of each and every one of these challenges, He Chose ME... He knows that I am worthy of this challenge... Me?, Me? Really God,Me???
I feel very unworthy of the Love and blessings that God lavishes on me. Often, I feel as if I have "messed this challenge up". There are many days that I have to force myself to get out of bed and put one foot in front of the other. There are other days that I (we) celebrate a "good" day if we make it with only one argument. I know that with each day, month and year, I (we) will arrrive closer and closer to God's plan.
On this day, I am choosing to take up the challenge!  I am choosing to face the challenges in a positive way! I am choosing to do anything necessary for all of my children's lives! I am choosing to Trust in you Lord!  I am choosing to Honor You Lord! I am choosing to LOVE!

Anybody Still Out There?

I have been horrible at this blogging thing lately. It seems as if my days are just passing before my eyes "faster than the speed of light". And, it isn't even our truly "busy" season. That season starts in another month. Baseball is on the horizon. This year we will have at least 2 playing with the possibility of 4. We are awaiting the "fate" of the Babe Ruth program...it isn't looking good for our older boys as most kids their age are playing on highschool teams. The first year, the enrollment was great for the 13-15 yr age but the last year it dwindled and this year the enrollment is really low. So, we are unsure that enough teams will make for them to play at all. It will be sad if that is the case because they love baseball so much, but it will certainly lessen the "busyness" by a few games.
We are busy planning lock ins, Bible Boot Camp, Summer camp and such... We are doing our best to stay up with everyone's schooling, and well the house... It isn't fairing as well. We manage to keep laundry and dishes done, the bathrooms clean, and some dusting and vacuuming... as for always straight and organized,ummm...NOT!
We are just living life as it comes! Enjoying our kiddos and enjoying each day that the Lord brings our way!Thank You Jesus for these many blessings you have given us!

Adjustments

The best laid plans of mice and men (or something like that).... I have been trying to get back to blogging on a regular basis; however, our house is "adjusting" once again to an added member. Rather than get stressed, I have given myself permission to just take life as it comes these days, and sometimes that means that my "intentions" and "ideas" never get met. I am ok with that, I think... but sometimes my "ideas" get the best of me, and I want to accomplish so much more than I do in a given day, week, or month even.
As for Toby, he is adjusting better than we could have even imagined. He is the happiest little boy. He smiles and laughs. He shouts for joy when he sees his brothers and sisters. He loves to go, go, go, and then he loves to come home again to be with his family. There have been several occassions when Brad and I have had to run a few errands, leaving the teen to babysit. To keep from hindering Toby's attachment to us, we take him along. He is happy to go, to be with us and to see all there is to see in our great big world. There is nothing sweeter than to see his reaction when we return home! He runs around the house finding each sister and brother... racing around to deliver his great big hugs to each one.
This boy loves to eat. I tease Brad ,often, that there is only one thing Toby loves more than his daddy, and that is FOOD, FOOD and more food. He has begun to adjust to the volume of food and even stops when he is full. He just loves his meal times! He loves to try new and different foods! To this point there isn't anything he won't try and very, very little that he doesn't like.
He loves to sing and listen to music. He and I sing preschool songs a lot, and I can't help but laugh a lot as he loves to follow "hand signs" and make a few of his own to go along with our silly songs. He loves to sing along at church with all of the worship music. Most of what he sings is unintelligable, but you can make out a few words and most importantly "Jesus, oh Jesus". He is picking up on English rapidly, understands what we say to him, and sounds much like a parrot mimicking everything we say to him. He has learned most of the kiddos names, and is beginning to make them clear sounds. We are teaching him baby "sign language". He is very astute and picks up on the signs and words quickly. He can now sign and say "please", "eat", "drink", "thank you" and "diaper" (thank you sounds like "chank chew" and diaper like"deye der").
He is so very precious and sweet. His personality is gentle, but he is learning to make himself heard in our large crowd.  He has begun to love on momma again (praise Jesus), and allows me to care for him during the times that daddy is away. But, I have to say that I am "TOAST" when daddy is around. He is most definitely his daddy's boy! He has more than enough hugs for each of his family members, and we are thrilled that he is attaching and prefers to stay close to family at this time (sometimes this is not the case for adopted children, and they readily go to others because they are unable to form firm attachments to family).
As you can see, he is adjusting amazingly well! As a matter of fact, the only hard adjustment for him has been at bedtime, but he is trusting us more and learning to not fear sleeptime.  We have implemented a bedtime "routine" and he loves listening to stories, being rocked and cuddled with a bottle (we continue to give him a nighttime bottle to further strengthen bonding and attachment), and then ,momma,  or daddy, or both sing to him, kiss him good night, and then it is off to bed. He has begun to go into his bed without crying or "meltdowns". This is a big step, and we are having fewer and fewer wake episodes during the night as well.

As for the family, we are adjusting well, but it is an adjustment none the less. The other children are having to learn to share our time even further and for some this is harder than for others. Many times they don't want to have anything to do with us (busy with their own "little" world) EXCEPT when the newest member is needing our care and attention. Sometimes, the ugly "green-eyed" monster appears...more often than we care to deal with it. Many times there are several "temper-tantrums" (and not always the 2 yr old).  It is an adjustment for Brad and I too. We are having to remember what it is like having a toddler in our home. He is an active, ornery "boy" toddler who needs constant supervision. We are learning that when a sibling "wants to play" that they aren't always reliable at staying with and watching the said toddler. We are learning that he likes to explore, touch and play with anything he can get his little hands on.  He isn't potty-trained as yet, and so that means constant diaper changes (forgot about the added duty that entails). Many days nothing at all gets accomplished except for holding, loving and cuddling my kiddos and helping my newest treasure adjust. I remind myself often that nothing else matters except for those precious treasures that God has entrusted to my care. Time management is perhaps our biggest struggle...learning what we can and cannot accomplish at this time in our lives.  We are still serving as Children's ministers at our church. Brad still works for Sprint, and we still homeschool. So, we are learning to adjust our time, adjust our ideas and projects and adjust our attitudes. That is just it!  It is all a "time", a "season", that we will get through, and our routines will be back together and life will move forward in a new normal. It is our prayer that we will move forward serving our Lord in any way that He calls us. ...and, I cannot wait until our "new Normal" is challenged once again by yet another of His callings (whatever and whenever that may be)!
